New Zealand Considers Lifting Home Purchase Ban: A Golden Opportunity for Vietnamese Investors

The New Zealand government is considering easing its ban on foreign nationals purchasing residential property. The ban, in place since 2018, was originally introduced to curb speculation—where many foreigners bought houses solely to resell at higher prices—driving property values up and making home ownership increasingly unattainable for locals.

In an interview in New York on 14/08/2025Finance Minister Nicola Willis stated: “Those talks have been underway and you would expect that a decision would be made by our Cabinet in the coming weeks.” (Bloomberg)

According to the Business Timesmany investors have complained that “they can reside but cannot buy a house”— a major barrier for international capital inflows. Meanwhile, New Zealand also needs to attract high-quality investment to revive its economy and strengthen competitiveness against countries such as Australia and Canada.

Investment Inflows into New Zealand Rising Strongly

Data from the New Zealand Immigration Service (as of August 8, 2025) shows

  • Valid have been submitted, with total committed capital exceeding NZD 1.63 billion (approx. USD 965 million).
  • Nearly 40% of applications came from the United States.
  • Investors pledged to inject more than USD 1 billion into domestic funds.

Minister Willis emphasized: “This is a signal that New Zealand continues to be seen as a safe, stable and attractive long-term investment destination. They don’t just want to invest; they want to own homes, live, and build their lives in this country.”

Positive Signals for Vietnamese Investors

If the restrictions are eased, this would mark a major turning point::

  • Investor visa holders would be able to purchase homes to settle down—an essential condition for long-term residency.
  • It would increase New Zealand’s appeal compared to other countries that limit property ownership rights.
  • It would open new opportunities for Vietnamese investors to both gain residency and legally own property in New Zealand.
