Major Change in EU Border Control: Biometric Entry/Exit System (EES) Replaces Passport Stamps

xuat-nhap-canh-eu

From October 12, 2025, the European Union will begin implementing the Entry/Exit System (EES). This new technology will gradually replace manual passport stamping, applied in 29 Schengen countries and directly affecting all non-EU nationals entering or leaving the area.

How Does EES Work?

  • Records biometric data: fingerprints & facial images.
  • Applies to non-EU citizens staying up to 90 days within 180 days (including visa-free travelers or those holding short-term visas).
  • Holders of biometric passports can use self-service kiosks to shorten border control time.

Understanding the Entry and Exit System (EES) for EU Borders

Implementation Timeline

  • From 12/10/2025: EES will be introduced alongside manual passport stamping.
  • Within 6 months: The system will gradually cover all external Schengen borders.
  • By 10/04/2026: EES will be fully operational, and manual stamping will be completely abolished.

Benefits & Challenges for Investors & Residency Applicants

✅ Increased transparency in border management.
✅ Faster processing time for compliant cases.
✅ Better control of permitted stays, reducing visa overstays.

⚠️ Risk of congestion in the early stages as the system stabilizes.
⚠️ Increased demand for personal data, raising privacy concerns.
⚠️ Travelers less familiar with technology may face difficulties during verification.

Preparing for ETIAS 2026

EES also lays the foundation for ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System), scheduled to be introduced in late 2026. At that time, citizens from visa-exempt countries entering Schengen will need to apply online for authorization before their trip, with a fee expected at EUR 20 per application.

Conclusion

The EU’s official rollout of EES marks a significant step in border management. While it brings greater transparency, security, and convenience, it also introduces new requirements for investors and residency clients traveling to Europe. Preparing in advance and understanding the rules will ensure a safer, smoother, and more efficient journey.
